I had Drago's tru duals in black with black mufflers on my Rk for about 10K miles with Tmax autotuner, after about 3 months I had a dyno run that burned some of the shield paint. later rusted ,pitted and looked crappy. mufflers(unseen under bags) turned to hell also. Frank was going to attempt warranty, but I never got pics to him in winter. I had another issue with Rush over a seat and brought up the shields and mufflers after warranty was gone. They replaced shields and mufflers.
I have everything for sale while still new(header is used) to go another direction on trike. had the not been over heated I feel they would have been ok.
Black pipes will fade in color down by the collector as chrome pipes will turn a light gold down by the collector.Only way to prolong it is to have the proper tune in your bike for your build and if/when you dyno it keep a fan blowing on the collector/muffler area.Hope this helps.
now that you mention a fan, i seem to remember a fan on the other side of bike(free dyno at Honda dealer)
It's a trade off, chrome will last longer but will eventually discolor and can still rust, it's expensive to have something re-chromed most would rather just buy new.Black won't last as long but can easily be re-sprayed with high heat paint available in any hardware store. Rustoleum is the best, I've seen PJ1 rust damn near overnight.Or you can split the difference get chrome when it gets old sand it and paint it black.
Has anyone painted a chrome exhaust with any luck and had good results with durability?
You CAN paint over chrome, but it takes a lot of prep work. You'll need to rough em up with sandpaper, scotch Brite pad, etc and then give a few costs with light sanding in between
I have a black dragula with 6000 miles on it , the pipe is awesome as far a performance and sound ,the black doesn't seem to hold up as well as the chrome might idk I ride all year everyday so the Knicks and scratches are expected. I am considering selling my black dragula 2 or keeping it and having it cerakoted http://www.cerakotehightemp.com/

exactly what I did here. first I went over the chrome with a red scrotchbrite, then a green one. then a couple of coats of etching primer, and then used the high heat bbq paint. looked good for a couple of years, then I got a different exhaust. never had to even touch it up.
Painting over chrome is not hard at all.You have to thoroughly sand it,you don't need to sand the chrome off. Then clean with a solvent that evaporates completely like acetone.Paint according to the instructions on the can.
