Default Cam Chain Shoe Replacement

So I am thinking its about time to replace the Cam Shoes again -- 50,000 miles on the second set. -- I am sure many will say to go to the hydraulic tensioner upgrade -- but with 115,000 on the bike -- not sure I want to do that expense.

So I am thinking changing just the shoes -- the chain should be fine, but my real question, do I need to change the oil pump? -- It has 115,000 on it also as I did not change the pump when I changed the shoes at 52,000. Will also change the lifters.

What company parts should I go with -- not sure how many miles I will keep the bike as I will probably sell it when I retire. So I am thinking expense to value ratio also.

Like hearing of your high mileage. How long did your compensator or two last?

And though I do not know a lot about our bikes internals, why not up grade to the new system if your thinking oil pump?

I also like hearing of your higher miles on the bike.

I recently went with Cyco replacement shoes and have heard they last much better but I have no personal verification of this. On the oil pump there are specs in the manual for the allowable wear I think.

If you do go with hydraulic tensioners the cam plate already has an upgraded pump that puts out higher pressure. Just saying.

The question was asked about my compensator -- it is the original.

My main goal in this maintenance is to keep the price as low as possible -- I will look at the upgraded hydraulics as compared to just shoes and possibly oil pump.

I plan on doing this during Christmas time -- when the weather should be the worse -- I am also 50 miles from the closest dealers both indy and Moco -- so am trying to round up just the needed parts and have to make a trip for extra.

Another option would be to go with a reman engine at the cost of around 5,000 -- but then again -- I may not keep the bike for that many miles since it is my daily rider and will probably sell after retirement

115,000 miles? Obviously its working well! As bigheadted said the oil pump specs are in the manual. The wear area I have noticed on oil pumps is any scoring on the back of the cam plate where the oil pump gears spin. If thats not scored you are probably good to go. I would probably go with the Cyco shoes. But you won't know until you pull it apart. Cyco has an installation tool and guide that looks pretty slick. What I don't like about changing the shoes is pulling the rockers and cams just to get to the shoe on the back of the cam plate.

If your staying with the original tensioner plate assembly, you might want to check the outer cam bearings in the plate for wear at that milage.

Agreed about the outer cam bearings and the inners also.

always amazes me about how things we take for granted in a car engine that last for well over 100,000 miles need to be checked at lower mileage on the Harley.

You pretty much answered you own question as to the tensioners ... replace the shoes.
