I was a Gold Wing rider for years. About 3 years ago I sold it to my brother who found buds to ride with. He in turn bought a Heritage Softail and I purchased an 06 Ultra. The Harley feels like a motorcycle. Better handling and a smoother ride. The only person that liked the GW better was my wife. She is no longer a passenger of mine because she now has her own.
10 years on Wings...I finally got tired of a collection of things - like 2+ hours to replace an air filter because it's under everything else. Lots of other things, but the bottom line is that I found something that "spoke" to me...
I'm a recovering goldwinger....I had a 1500 and an 1800. The 1800 winghas superior braking, acceleration and lighting than my Ultra Classic. It also runs as quiet and smooth as a Honda Accord with the windows down. It has no personality, no history, no over-riding sense of brotherhood, no dealer support/networking and is just plain boring. I'll take my UC and all that it is any day over my former Wings and twice on sunday!
Yep - I have been a 4 year GW rider up to about a month ago - now own an 07 Ultra Classic. I really liked my GoldWing (48k miles - no problems) - but I love my Ultra. I do miss the acceleration but I love the handling of the Ultra so much better. and you are right - the bike has so much more personality. Where else can you go to pick up your new bike and there are 3 blondes standing there - ready to leave with you
I feel the same way. Over the last month or so, I would pour over the internet, trying to find a good deal on a new wing. Then, I would take a ride on my 13 yr old FLH......and forget all About a Honda !! Just my Opinion...in nearly every sense, the Honda is a superior machine.....no vibration, quiet, every creature comfort you can imagine.....mechanically reliable . . . . . but it lacks SOUL. Next bike will be an Ultra.
My first and only bike before my 02 Ultra was a 97 1500 'Wing. It was a great bike. It was just what I wanted at the time. When I finally started getting the itch to move to a Harley I knew it was going to be an Ultra. (kinda got used to all the stuff... cruise, CB, stereo etc...) There is no real fair way to compare, you know the whole apples and oranges thing. The best way to sum it all up was how a freinds wife put it; The Ultra just looks like a motorcycle.
I'm a recent convert. I have bought new Gold Wings in 1983, 1988, 1998, and 2001. Last summer I was ready to make the trade for a loaded 2006 when it hit me that the only thing that had changed was the color. I couldn't bear locking myself into another 5 years of payments for the same old ***** in a different skirt. My Honda dealer had offered me $8500 for my trade. I threw it on ebay for 3 days and sold it for $12,500. With the extra cash I headed down to the local HD dealer. His first two 07 Ultras had just come in. I grabbed the white one. 4000 miles later, riding is fun again. I had 0 problems with any of my Wings and they are built extremely well but as a rule, I get bored with bikes and wives after 5 years.
Rollon : I have ridden and done my own maintance on Wings since my first GL1000 back in 86, have had several 1000's, a cpl 1100's, 2 1200's and 1 1500, they were all nice bikes. The wings are smooth and dependable. Late this winter i started looking at a 1800. i read alot about the wings and the HD's i rode a 1800 some and they are nice and quiet and smooth as all they rest, BUT when my **** spent 10 minutes in the saddle of my 06 Road GLide i got 15 years younger and felt something inside wake up that had been long dead. A Big part of riding a big HD V-twin can't be described it has to be experianced. Go rent one if at all possible, or find someone that will let you ride thiers for a few miles, it wont take long. My personal choice after looking at all the baggers was a Road Glide check them out, the frame mounted fairing is more like the wing than the Ultra but the Ultra is a danm fine machine in its own right. Tex is right the maintance on the Wings was getting to be a PIA, was to much plastic surrondeding everything. the HD's are just as smooth, MUCH eaisier to handle at lower speeds. My wife loved riding on the back of the wings. The Road Glide, well now she just did her MSF course and she wants her own Harley in time, she picked a honda shadow to start with but is already looked a cpl years down the road for her own V-twin.
