The packing gets worn and you get a tinny sound, when it is packed well you get a pure engine sound without the tinny banging. Sometimes the packing blows out through the baffle after a while.
I use the same stuff as StreetGlide2006.I get it at a local dirt bike shop. They seem to replace them alot more in dirt bikes than we do. Most of the local street bike shops around here don't carry the fiberglass sheet type packing. They carrysome type of loose packing(something like cotton candy) but the fiberglass sheets work great. Just tie it with wire.
I did a Google search for "stainless steel wool" and found a roll of it for about $50, if I remember correctly. Google it, and you'll find several sources. I picked a coarse grade, wrapped it around the baffles, and secured it with safety wire.
Really gives my SE mufflers a deep sound without being too loud.
I'm another who used medium grade steel wool as baffle packing. On my V&H propipe though, the baffle is nice and short so I just used the small sanding pads and poked a hole through the center so they were donut shaped.
I pulled it out to take a look this winter and after 10,000 + miles, it is still fully intact, just coated with a bunch of carbon.
