My black RCX slip-ons don't match the color of the HD black heat shields. I'm thinking about prepping the surfaces of the slip-ons and heat shields and spraying both with black hi-temp header paint. I ride LOTS and chips and nicks are going to happen...with off-the-shelf hi-temp header paint readily available in almost any parts store, touch-ups should be easy.

After 3-years my heatshields look fine, but the muffler started looking a little rough especially the bottom side. I did the BBQ paint trick and it works fine, but the finish is very flat compared to the original ceramic.

If you are going to have your existing exhaust refinished I would suggest getting them ceramic coated in lieu of powder coated. I have read about issues with powder coat holding up on an exhaust.

Two years ago I bought a set of Samson Hell Raisers in flat sinister black ceramic. The pipes are incredible, sound, fit, finish etc. I removed the heat shields and had them powder coated in gloss black, the powder didn't hold up so I went with a high heat satin powder coat which did hold up well. After a year or so I just couldn't take the satin black look against the paint and chrome so I had the heat shields chromed and now I have the look that I want.

Black is fitting on some bikes but as hard as I tried to make the cross over the chrome side lured me back.

that's the route that I took. I had an extra exhaust hanging around so if I didn't like it, it would be nothing to switch back. I ended up running the exhaust until I got a great deal on a black Rinehart 2-1.

I scuffed up the chrome with a green scotchbrite pad, then used some self etching primer, then a couple of coats of hi-temp bbq black. looked great, the only touch up I ever had to do is where I scratched the exhaust in my garage. otoh, I have a sbuddy who has the v&h propipe in black. his is definitely showing it's age and could stand a re-coat. were it me, I would scuff it and use bbq black......

Oh you still need to clean the black ones. Pig spit works great after washing The black pipes and Black heat shields still looked great when I trade the 2013.

IMHO, you need to have special heat resistant powder just like you have to have high-temp paint for exhaust, even the shields. I bought V+H dresser duals and H/O slips over three and a half years ago and they look brand new still. Just regular washings. If anything would go wrong with them, you could send them back within the first year. Oh btw, not only do they look fantastic, they sound and perform great! Good luck!

Agree power coating sucks on exhaust parts
