The decel pop wasn't the fault of the product, it was the lack of knowledge on how to eliminate it.

Yeah had nothing to do with the tuner. Well I guess if you are not familiar with VE tables, AFR ratios set (AFTER) your VE tables adjusted within 5%, knock sensors, decel enrichment, accell enrichment, etc... You can see why it would have decel pop. Well at least he found a tuner that got rid of his pop. keep on riding man, be safe.

I think the thundermax is a great product but I would be careful with the Thundermax with our Rushmore bikes especially. Replacing your ECM could cause a warrantee issue? One of my local dealerships won't even touch a bike with a Thundermax. So I ask, "were they trying to sell me a race tuner or they do not want or can't work with them?" So I thought, Hmmm... If I were on a tour out of state and had any issues, it might be a pain in the *** to get dealer service? I went with the piggi back FP3 for $350.00 and tuned it with my iPhone myself. Huge increase in performance. Great product V&N! If I have any issues, I remap it back to stock and remove it.

Now this is what I sit around thinking about and this is just my opinion... Any of our touring bikes are not race bikes. I don't need to dial in my bike like I would have wanted with any of my sport bikes when racing in my past. I'm not riding in comp races with my SG and don't need to squeeze every bit of power in precision for all of my power ranges.

If all you are doing is Stage I exhaust and maybe cams, I'm thinking that the need for a tuner that requires a Dyno are coming to an end for most of us really. Technology has gotten way cool... I can spend under $400 for a decent well supported tuner. A tuner that has been developed for our Rushmore bikes, that comes with all kinds of cool features like throttle sensitivity control, speedo calibration, cam support, etc. These base maps have already been developed from the manufacturer, and in my case developed by V&H on a Dyno with my configuration with my model bike. V&H included these already Dyno'd maps you load into your ECM and then you run the auto tuner feature to dial it down. They also have a great customer support center that you can tell them what you are doing and they can build you a custom map and/or tell you how to configure. This way I do not have to spend the Dyno charges. My bikes runs great and got me to where I like it.

I still do not have a full understanding on comparing Dyno tunes to using the FP3 or a PV5 when all you are doing is Stage I and maybe upgrading your cams. Anyone have a comment on this? Is spending $300 - $400 on a Dyno run worth it over auto tuning with the FP3 or PV5? Will you get $400 worth of performance with adding the Dyno costs and if so , how much gain? If I have a good Stage I and upgraded my cams with the HD race tuner and did the Dyno would it be better then the FP3 or PV5 and how much? Again, I'm not racing this bike on the track anywhere.

Just my thoughts...

After much reasearch and the info provided on this forum I have decided to stay with the SE tuner and have TMan 555 cams installed. Dropping the bike off next week for the install can't wait.

Thanks again

Well cams are installed and they are awesome. Final dyno numbers are 93hp 111tq. Torque curve starts to come on early. Blast to ride.

Default Gear drive

Hope you converted your cam drive from chain to gear driven cams, otherwise down the road you're gonna have to open that motor up again to replace the chain tension pads which normally wear thin between 30-50k miles. I had mine done on my 2012 SG. That service is not mentioned by HD. The pads were VERY worn at 48k miles. I have Thundermax, S&S 541 EZ Start Cams w/gear drive, Rinehart headers and 4" mufflers, hi flow baffles. Dyno tuned at 105 ft lbs of torque. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SCOOT!!

Default FP3 DYNO Tune and thundermax

I too looked into this combo but once you buy a FP3 and you have it dyno at a shop you are almost spending what it costs for a Thundermax. I went with a Thundermax on my 2015 and love it. Void the Warranty maybe, but I will cross that bridge when I get there if needed. It is covered under the 4 years of additional warranty that I have purchased. Unless the Thundermax causes the problem I would think they would have a tough time backing out...I hope I do not have to find out.

I replied earlier on my opinion. I have the thundermax ($400 ebay) and recently got tired of the Rinehart true dual left pipe heating up my leg at stop lights. Had to keep my left leg up and foot on the floorboard. So I found a great deal on used V&H power dual and installed it with CVO mufflers and didn't have to touch the tuner, It adjusted all by itself. Same will go when I pull the baffles out and put in some 2 inch Fulsacs with screens. No messing anytime I make changes. I kept the original computer and intake incase of a problem, it will take an hour to re-install them and the dealer won't have to know any better.

p.s. the V&H came with the stock 12mm bungs and the guy had already installed 18mm bungs.

I have an FP3 and love it. No need to dyno the bike and they include maps that you download that were created on a dyno anyway. So, I was going to go with a HD tuner but decided not to. No need for me because I'm just going to stay with a Stage I. I did the auto tune it to dial it right in. I've heard great things about the Thundermax but I know one of my local dealers won't work on a bike with one of them. It replaces your ECM. The local Police Department brought a stolen bike to the this dealer to get the VIN off of it and the dealer said that the Thundermax does not store the VIN and they could not connect to it anyway so the dealer could not help them out. I worry about touring and being far from home and something happening and the dealer cannot help me out so I didn't buy it.

not necessarily. the 4 additional years that you purchased is not warranty, but a 'service contract'. they can, and sometimes do, deny coverage (aka void the warranty) for a multitude of reasons. it can be as minor as changing suspension or tire sizes. and because it is not a warranty, it does not fall under the protections of the Magnusson moss warranty act. so they could deny you a replacement radio because you have a thundermax, and there is nothing you could do about it, except request a prorated refund of your esp.
