Even in the heat of summer in Phoenix we ride usually up into the white mountains and you can be in southern Ca if you want in a few hours. But it does get hot and AZ has state income tax.
Anywhere from Raleigh to Knoxville is ideal IMO. Good cost of living, excellent roads and even if you need to work in the city, the country roads are only a 20 minute ride away. I prefer to be within reasonable reach of the mountains but not actually in them. From Raleigh / Durham, I'm 3 hours from the beach and 2 hours from the foothills.
My wife and I dislike the cold weather also. We decided that we wanted to live in a warmer climate and have been snowbirds in Sarasota, Florida for the past 12 years. We built our retirement home this past year and have ridden our Harleys to Florida this past fall and have left them there. So now I have the opportunity to ride during the winter. The cost of living is a bit higher that Pennsylvania, but there taxes are less. Wherever you decide to live, riding all year long is great .
Well I know you said you didn't like the south but Florida has 12 months of riding. We moved down from NYC to Daytona. Great weather and still close enough to take a weekend trip up to NC/ Tenn towards the Dragon. Florida has only state tax and housing is much cheaper than NY.

I love vacationing in florida, but the salt spray on windows and everything else would worry me on all the chrome on my bike. Do you see much rust on your bike, does it affect the chrome?

You really only get salt spray if you live right next to the ocean and ride A1A all the time. I am 5 miles from the ocean and there is no salt on my bikes. A coat of wax 4 times a year and no rusting or pitting either. I do wash my bikes if I've ridden near the ocean on a windy day, but otherwise there are no salt issues.
