Default Problem w/ Charity Ride

On Sunday I participated in the Hendrick Motor Sports Charity ride in the Charlotte area. There were 2000+ bikes riding. The entire ride was on interestate. We ended at Lowes Motor Speedway.

I have decided that I do not like these mass rides. During the entire trip we experienced cars darting in and out of our lanes. The constant speed changes were also stressful. That being said, the cagers have little or no consideration for bikes. My biggest concern was that these idiot drivers cut in front of bike riders. These drivers were simply reckless. The ride was escorted by numerous Highway Patrol, county, and local agencies. This fact did not stop the idiots from weaving in and out of the path of the bikes.

I am not sure what organizers can do to minimize the risk, but I would think that something needs to be tried.

I was riding with a group of 12 on Sunday eye to eye with a lady who insisted in getting my lane---She could see me I was maybe two feet from her car- I looked right at herand told her to wait--she kept moving over--long story short we all shifted two lanes over---no consideration.

to make it worst this is motorcycle safety month in GA every sign on the highway clearly says watch for motorcycles or share the road with motorcycles.

I don't like the ride either. To many chain reaction braking going on and it seems the riders just don't pay attention like they would if they were alone. Your not safe just because your in a organized ride. I'm sure you will get alot of different opinions from the parade goers on this.

It's one thing to ride in a large group with people you know of their riding habits, but a large group of strangers. I would at least want to maintain a bit more separation between bikes.

i have a confession to make, after 20 plus years of riding i have never done a poker run or any "big" riders due to the the same. seems that while you might be more visable in a large group the chance of something going wrong are great. wife and I tend to enjoy our solo rides or with 2 or 3 other bikes,

I've been on some big rides and solo rides, it don't matter, stupid people will always do things like try to take your lane with you still in it.
I know of a Lexus that has a nice big "birthmark" in the fender because he tried to take my lane with me in it.I know he saw me, I was right across from his left fender. ( the fender with the "birthmark" ) He did get the message.

I did a bike blessing Sunday, first time in that big of a group 600-700 bikes. I was surprised how smooth it all went, not many rubs though most all older/wiser riders.
Cages, all but one that got in by accident were polite and waved.
I guess being close to Milwaukee has it's perks, people are used to big group of bikes and happy to see them.$$$$

When dealing with Poker Runs and such we alway try and stay within the group we normally ride with. We know eachothers ridding habbits and I usually ride in formation with the same friends. I do know what you mean about riding around unknows and traffic, no good solution.

It's up to you if you like the big rides or not. But, lets not forget the purpose, whether you ride or not, send 'em a check. It's worth it.
