Default Excess play in trans shift shaft

Has anyone noticed side to side play in the transmission shifter shaft where it exits trans. on 2016 touring. No leaks at shaft, but shaft is moving when shifter arm is wiggled.

I think I had the same issue you are describing. Took it to the dealership for them to fix and so it would be documented. I think they just slid the arm on further and re tightened, but if it does it again i'll push for more extensive fix.

My 1990 bike did much the same, which I bought new! Your shifter lever and shaft are the same parts as on my bike. I don't believe it's a problem, as there is nothing I know of that puts any actual end load on the shaft, either from inside or outside the casing. I have found the pinch bolt to be a bit loose on the odd occasion and nipped it up, but otherwise left it alone.

Default use Heim joints

Mine was same !
I replaced shaft with a shifter shaft with Heim joints !
No play now , Just solid crisp shifting!

I am referring to the shift pawl shaft in the trans itself with the lever bolted to the end protruding out from the trans.I cannot see how the shaft seal would do its job with that amount of play, but it seems to work.I am going to loosen the arm and try and move lever closer to trans. case.

mine has a bit of play. no leaks so I guess it is 'to be left alone'.

Thanks for the video " harfooz". I guess the seal has so much give to allow pawl shaft side to side movement and not develop a leak. I am going to visit Dealer tomorrow and check other new bikes and see if they all have this clearance between shaft and trans case.

You should have a small amount of side play in your shift lever at the trans. If not excessive wear will occur on the shift pawl lever assembly. You can check to see if everything is there behind that lever. From lever in it should be, retaining ring, washer, seal in that order. The seal is quite think. It actually seats in a sleeve in the trans case.
You should be ok but you may want to have your dealer take a look.
Hope that helps.
