FLySlow, Yes and no. The whole inside muffler assy. is removable. but the inner part is welded together. I had local friends who work for local muffler mfg. take them apart and replace the inner tubes with a Quieter set up. It is deep sounding but not loud.It is not rocket science, just grind off spotweld and replace a piece of tubing. anyone interested ? let me know and I,ll go into the details. love mine now. Dan
I wouldn't bother with the sound-clip thing. I tried it too before I bought my ovals and you just can't really get a true and accurate feel for the sound from an audio clip. By the way, the ovals really sound a lot better after a 1000 miles or so. I like mine.
Some of you folks really have me rethinking now. I bought a touring bike sothe better half and I can RIDE!!! I really don't want to go much louder than stock but I will be adding an intake and SERT to help cool out the motor. The stock pipes just don't sound like Harley. What happened to the potato sound? What slipons would you guys recommend as an alternative to V&H Ovals?
PS: My last bike was a Yamaha Roadstar Silverado. I put V&H Longshots on it. Nice quality pipes and the sound was great but man were they loud. Kinda wears you down after a few miles. Maybe it's an age thing....my age!
I was going to install the V&H ovals as well. I have been waiting for 2 1/2 weeks for my dealer to get a set, and found out yesterday that they haven't even ordered them yet. So....I asked them to upgrade me to a set of Rinehart (Eagle Beak's) for the same money. They agreed, and I should pick up the bike today at lunch. [sm=biker2.gif]
Listen to some Supertrapps -- they have <3 dB sound level increase, but sound & perform much better than stock. Ignore the sound clips on the Internet -- you gotta hear them up close and personal. This is essentially the HD Screaming Eagle Performance muffler that the MoCo no longer sells due to the EPA stuff. There is a good review in last month's Bagger magazine.
I responded to your last PM -- not sure if you got it. I put the Supertrapps on the EGC today - I used a sound meter to measure before & after. Before, @ 12 ft behind the bike, was 78 dBA at idle. After installation, the level was 81 dBA. They have a nice deep sound, and only minimal increase in volume.
