Default Proper oil temp???

Hello Everyone,
I'm glad to have found this great site. I tried to do a search first as instructed in the welcome page. I have a 2007 Street glide with Reinhardt true duals and a Vance and Hines fuel Pac system. The bike is now running perfect at all speeds after manytuning attempts with the fuel pac module(Iput 800 miles in the last week) The major problem with the fuel pac is V&H will not give your the values of the programs. The question I have I believe I am running a bit lean. What is the proper oil running temperature?? I hear 210-240?? with all you guys and all this great amount of knowledge please tell me the best operating temp. With the right temp valueI will know if I set this bike up correctly. BTW I have had numerous Haley's a BMW K1200LTE, and few metrics's. This bike is the best fit for my wife and I so far. The transmission is a noise box but that's another issue.
I posted this in the welcome area a bunch a very friendly people welcomed me. THANK YOU GUYS!!! I appreciate the super cool welcome
The proper riding Temperature would be extremely helpful...Thanks in advance, Howard & Andrea from Rochester HillsMichigan

Welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe whatever the oil says the engine is roughly 30degrees warmer than the oil. Oil Running at 230 is just fine!

Outside temp & conditions will effect temp... I have a '07 road glide (Sami S\O - Ness BS & V&H Fuelpak) - took a putt yesterday (Palm Springs - 99 degress outside temp) - Oil Temp ran 217 - 230

Son's '05 RKS with oil cooler - Ran 8 - 10 degrees cooler

Planning on changing over to Amsoil as I have heard that this will drop oil temp another 5 - 10 degrees

Welcome to the Dark Side, Howard. In stock form HD claims the normal operating temperature for an '07 is 230°, which means to me it would go higher in traffic, etc. This is much too hot for my taste, and I've taken steps to keep temps under control. First, if you're not hearing any detonation and your fuel mileage is acceptable I would leave the A/F ratio alone. I also have an '07 SG, and the keys to keeping oil temps under control is to use a high-quality synthetic oil, install an oil cooler with thermostat, and keep A/F under control. Lean (to a degree) is okay in the cruise range, but I would leave it alone elsewhere if you have a canned or custom map. BTW, the HD Premium Oil Cooler is quite easy to install, but be sure you have a 7/16" or 11mm Allen socket available, or something similar that will install the oil-filter adapter. You could rig a device to tighten this fitting using a threaded coupler or a
locked 7/16"-OD nut on the end of a bolt.

We hit 90° (in the shade) for the first time yesterday and my temps stayed around 200° while I was moving and peaked once at 220° in traffic. This to me is about as high as I'd like it to go. I have tweaked my cruise range (5-10% throttle @ 2k-3k RPM) as lean as I can get without detonation to maximize gas mileage, which was in the low-50's on our ride yesterday. I don't think this engine is capable of doing better than this. I've thought about a second oil cooler, a Jagg on the left downtube, which would be easy to install in series with the existing cooler. A few have reported here that this addition has worked well. Oil coolers are a good idea, especially on an '07, but as many point out it has limited effectiveness when not moving. It does work somewhat through convection, but will not keep temps under control under prolonged periods of idling or very slow progress in stop-and-go traffic. It remains to be seen how mine will fare under these conditions in 95° summer heat. Cylinder fans an be installed, which fit on the left side of the engine where the horn is normally located. I didn't go this route mainly because they are expensive and I have air horns in that location.

I'm not familar with the V&H FuelPak, so I can't help with efforts to tweak your A/F ratio.

On a related note.... after reading your post and you have the RH TDs and the Fuel Pack ..... I didn't see where you stated you have some type of Stage 1 Air Cleaner (ie AN Big Sucker.... Screamin Eagle Stag 1 Air Filter ....etc). If you put on pipes and a fuel pack you NEED to have some change in the air-flow as well.

My '05 E-Glide 95" motor runs 195 to 210 normally and on a warmer day if stop n go might get to 220 or so. I've seen it hit 226 is highest so far this year (just got the bike in December, so haven't had it in truly high heat yet).

I understood that oil temperature needed to hit at least 212F to boil off any condensation so running cooler may not be a benefit?...

I have an 07 SG (4k mile) and recently put a thermo oil dip stick in. On long trips( Tx summer) I notice my temperatures are anything between 210 and 250 max(stop/starts), average temperature seems to be around 230...It can take me up to 20 miles to get the oil temperature up to 200F.

I am planning to change to synthetic the next service which by all accounts should drop it a few degrees.

MPG averages around 40 to 44.

According to the Service Manual, pg 3-1, normal operating temp. is 230 at 2000 rpm. Mine has been running about 210-215.
