Question Starter Issue

I have a 2009 Road King Classic. When I start the bike sometimes it sounds like the starter drops off and grinds, and sometimes it starts fine. I've had it to the dealer twice and they tell me everything I'd ok. I have a new battery in it and keep it on a trickle charger. Not sure what's going on? Need some help.

Your dealer is feeding you a load of bull.

Don't know what you mean by dropping off but I think I got an idea about the grinding. My 08 was grinding on start up, but not all the time. Once in a while. I ordered and installed an all-***** starter clutch. wasn't sure what I was doing but everyone was saying it wasn't too hard. "Once you get the parts in hand you'll know what to do" The job was pretty simple and it solved the problem.

Not sure if the compensator caused it to go or not. My compensator did feel weak, judging by slowly letting the clutch out while holding on to the brake. It would bang/clunk pretty good. Would also bang/clunk at low rpm take offs. I planned to change it out over the winter but my stator went before the end of the season. I had a local do the stator and he checked the compensator and said it looked fine. After he put it back together it felt much better. Maybe the comp. bolts were backed out a little??

Anyway, that thread that SBates08 gave you is a good start.
Good Luck

check the connection of the starter. I had the same happen to me and come to find out my starter was loose and not making the ground connection.

Some people let off the starter button too soon and can cause problems. Leave it pressed completely until the engine fires up...won't hurt it. When it fires up, the engine speed will (should) disengage the starter.
