I have a 2006 ultra classic, just got it recently, and notice when I start the bike the starter starts to crank then goes silent for a sencond then cranks again and starts bike.
Is this normal or is my starter going?
Thanks Glide
you may be correct when bike is running display is at 14 volts.
but only at 10 prior to starting and obviously drops lower when starter kicks in.
I've noticed that my voltmeter reads just above 10 before I try starting it and then it drops below 10.
I installed the battery in March 2010 and it stays on a BT during the cold months and if I'm not going to be riding it for a week or more.
I've been told that it may crank over but not start if the voltmeter is below 10 but I've not (nor ever plan to) let that happen.
No that's not normal. Disconnect your battery. Take a small stainless steel or brass wire brush to your battery terminals and cable lugs, put a little grease on them, and try it again. Most likely, it's dirty terminals, next would be the battery. However, low volts equals high amps. So, if you continue to use with this condition, it could damage your starter/other elect. components.
