If you still have cam chain tensioners, check them! I actually had a newer style hydraulic tensioner go bad on a 2010 and I would have sworn it was a lifter going bad.

^^+1 - I've used several sets of these on a few different bikes with very good success. You can order them from Jegs or Summit Racing.

Another vote for S&S standards. You just never hear a bad word about them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll be looking at it this weekend to make sure the lifters are the issue. I assume (I know) if I drop the push rod tubes, one or more of the push rods will be very loose if it is indeed a lifter? Any actual tests I can do to make sure?

If you park the bike after warming it up. Then loosen push rod tubes (remove the holder clip). Slide each one up and check end play. Make a note of it on a piece of paper how much end play on each rod (up and down). Leave bike to cool and probably wait until next morning. Check end play again when cold. They all may have a bit but the the bad one (if indeed it's a lifter and I am 90% sure it is) will have quite a bit more end play. Now you know which one is bad. It's up to you what you do about it. I would recommend changing them all but it's not my bike or my money. Hope that helps.

I do intend to replace all four if it is a lifter. Just want to make sure. I don't mind spending the money but, don't want to **** away money if it is not necessary.

OK, its official, I'm a dumbass. Thinking the worst, I was planning on replacing the lifters on my bike. This morning I finally got around to checking to make sure that was the problem before I sent in the order. Broke out my 12" extension to use as a stethoscope to find out exactly which one was the problem even though I fully intended to replace all of them, I wanted to know which one was bad. Cranked the bike up and started checking, first the front and then the back, not a sound out of them, still had the rattle. Working my way back I found the problem. Both the nuts on the exhaust flange were gone. I couldn't believe it. I had myself convinced it was lifters. 10 minutes later, nuts on and NO rattle. Live and learn. LOL

My guess is there are quite a few Harley exhaust nuts out on the nation's highways.... I know I've contributed a couple

Good job on getting to the source.

After finding this, I checked the front, both were loose. Got those tightened down good also. I'm thinking a bit of blue locktite might be good idea. Just don't know if it would last due to the heat? Anyone done this?
