I went through an advanced riding course this past weekend and to challenge myself I brought my spouse with me. I learned a few things about the 2014 FLHTK Limited which I have passed on to HD. All of the other HD's that I have ridden, if you exceed the lean angle you scrap the floor board first, then it tilts. Not on the Limited riding two up! Going through S turns at 25-30 mph in second gear, more so in a RH turn, I was scraping the riders, rear floor pan support bracket, and front cylinder head pipe first, the floor pan never moved.
the particulars:
Rider-220 lbs
Passenger-120 lbs
rear shocks 38 psi
front and rear tire pressure-40 psi
stock suspension
Reinhardt dual exhaust.
Just want to pass this along, it could cause a "Low Side" if not corrected!
I wonder what would have happened if you had the shocks air pressure at manufacturers recommendation, which is 50psi for 2-up regardless of weight. I too ride a '14 FLHTK and the rear shock air pressure makes a ride height difference.
curious to hear more. So did the lack of scrapes on the boards cause you to exceed what you felt would be an acceptable angle and cause you and your SO to go over?
In your first picture you can see there is a spacer behind the floor board mount. This is probably to give clearance for your aftermarket exhaust. This may be why you're scraping the mount first. I've also read where people complain about their aftermarket exhaust header scraping before the stock one would have.
Hopefully you came away from the course knowing what your particular bikes limits are. Now,if you want to exceed those limits,do so at your own and passengers risk.Ridden normally, touring bikes are not meant to scrape.
It is normal that some bike mods can change behaviors of the bike in a particular situation. Good for you that you found out the limit during that course instead experiencing it in real situation.
GTK, I know where the limits are on this bike now! Hahahah, I am a motorcycle instructor so I am sure I was pushing the limits in a closed course environment, and my spouse knew that I would be, and she/we were prepared, we dressed for the slide! All things went well, it was uneventful, great course! I just wanted to get the information out there, knowledge is only good if passed on!
Aftermarket exhaust? Ive scraped floorboards, the support bracket and even the back ends of the slip ons depending upon the radius and undulations in the curve
