Anyone else experience this? I have one of the "decorative" derby covers. Have had it for a number of years now. Always get the gaskets from the HD shop for those derby covers. If I used any other style it always seems to leak. Changed the oil the other day and it was leaking. Took it apart put a different seal on it, still leaked. Took it apart again, put the derby cover on a flat surface and it's a bit warped. Put the OEM one back on the bike, no more oil leak. Kind of bummed because I have that certain theme on the bike and now that piece needs to be replaced. Not sure I want to spend the money if the same thing is just going to happen. Local HD shop said... ya... those after market ones tent to warp.
Over torqueing the screws will warp a derby cover.
I don't see many mechanics follow the procedure to put the derby back on. Just screw it around the circle and tighten down. Supposed to be star tightened at 80-110 inch pounds.
If you haven't had it for too long, see if they'll warranty it. If you've had it quit awhile, it gets real hot on that primary cover and replacing it is inevitable. Another option is to use a thicker cork gasket that will squish under torque. I used to do that on my 98 FXDWG primary cover for years with great success. It's what I would do.
Get a sheet of emery paper and place it on a flat surface like glass or maybe a cast iron saw table and swirl the derby cover on the emery to flatten it out. worth a try?
I had that happen on my old bike too. I put two of the disk type gaskets in and the leak stopped. Just used the old and the new.
Hey guys... Thx for all the replies, sorry for my late reply, was out for golf league... To answer the other questions, I've had it for probably 4+ years now, yes... I have a torque wrench and use it every time. Always go by the manual for torque specs working on my ride.
Double gasket actually isn't a bad idea. I hadn't thought about doing that. I did look up the price because I forgot how much it was. It's $50ish bucks. $50 every few years isn't horrible. I think this time around I'll just pick up a new one, if it warps again, then maybe I'll try the double gasket trick...!
I had that exact same one on a dyna and it warped too.
Good to know...! I did actually just ordered another on. I'll be a sucker and try again. :-)... If it warms again, then I'll do something different. Ain't going to do the 3rd strike... LOL
