Button it up the way it is. The adjustment is supposed to be made with the weight off and clutch cable disconnected.
I'm not knocking anyone's way of doing things, but why did I buy a service manual if it is wrong? It seems to me the procedures in there work and I don't have to guess if it is right.
Procedure is there so lazy people won't bitch about how hard it is to do..lol. Plus the dealers sure as hel l will have some irate customers at 4-6 hours for service. Go ahead torque top bolt.....it will tighten the 1 lower bearing...... The top star nut is what sets bearing preload and you sure are not torquing that to 70ftlbs. Not the nut on top. But torquing the top nut will make the most unknowing feel better. IT DOES NOT SET PRELOAD. Tech that tells u that......lol yikes But the top bearing is still loose and no swinger test will show it.....smoke and mirrors and it will feel different for a little while but back to same ole crap within 2-3k But if your happy with half a job So be it.
I don't know many techs that are worth taking your bike too that use the service manual as a set in stone way of doing repairs. Capacities and torque specs are all that are even worth looking at.
BTW both front fork tubes should be able to slide through one of the tees during the setting. It takes an extra 10 minutes to do a better job and have peace of mind.
. Hey that's a great site.....I haven't seen that in years .
Excellent!!!
After installing new steering head bearings with a liberal amount of quality grease packed into them, the difference is amazing!
Riding the backroads with twists and turns seemed so fluid. I still need to get it in my mind that it's all good now. It's gonna take more riding time to feel fully comfortable. Right off, I found that the front end will fall into a turn on its own at slow parking lot speeds. There's a bit of counter steer needed to maintain control. A lot less input is required on my part. Making the bike steer and letting the bike steer are 2 different animals. After riding for 2 hrs, the feel only got better and better!
With all the stuff I've done to the bike recently, working the steering has to be the most beneficial. This machine feels GREAT!!
