Default RE: How do I remove a fairing?

I've been watching these posts. I am mechanically challenged and would like to remove the fairing from my 05 ultra to put in some new speakers. The two lower screws by the neck..can anyone be more specific where they are as in a pic or something from a manual or on their bike? What I'm hearing is that I don't really need to remove the headlight or ring, just get the fairing off and unplug the headlight when I have room to get my hands in. The speakers are plug and play so all I have to do is remove the old, and put the new ones in. Any more assistance will be appreciated. thanks so far

dspencer,

You don't have to remove the headlight but I find it is a nice place to put your hand for removal if you are working by yourself...to each his own I guess.

Anyway, the two lowers screws are on the bottom edge of the fairing, on either side of the neck, facing the gas tank. If you turn the front wheel all the way to the left, you can see and get at the right one more easily. Then turn all the way to the right and you can gain access to the left one. Hope this helps.

First of all you need to get an owner's manual from Harley so you can be sure you are doing things correctly.

Terry

Do you get any manuals when you buy a new Harley?

Or do you have to buy both the Owners Manual and the Service Manual?

You get an owners manual but you have to buy the shop manual. Get it. It's worth is weight in gold, IMO.

Thanks for your help folks. I got the Hogtunes, Dakota Digital and Garage door opener in this weekend. All worked out great. I did NOT remove the headlight and it was fine. The hardest part for me was getting the bottom screws back in. Next time I will put the middle screw (for the windshield) back in first and then the bottom ones.

Just curious, if you had two people helping, could you lean the fairing far enough forward to gvie you enough room to remove the speakers without even disconnecting the headlight? Guess what I'm wondering if another guy held the fairing and was able to do that while you worked on the speakers, would you have enough clearance to remove and install new speakers without totally removing the fairing? thanks

You could do it with someone helping. As I recall, there is room with the fairing just leaned forward, but why would you want to? Unplugging the headlight is almost as simple as unplugging from a home light socket. Then you can just remove the fairing and have it completely out of your way while you work.

One thing I do is put a cloth between the fairing and the passing lamps so there is no possibility of scratching the fairing on the back of the lamps.

The hardest part of the whole speaker change over is trying to unplug the speaker plugs from the speakers. You mau find needle nose plyers are a big help, you can get some leverage with them and not have to yank on the plugs and risk ripping the wire of the bike. Also, a pad or blanket on the fender is a real good idea.

Noticed that. I just put the rear Hog tune speakers in and the hardest part was getting the connectors off. They eventually did and they sound great. Now just have to figure if I'm going to tackle the fairing speakers vs. having the dealer do it. You guys have been a lot of help and I'm thinking of going for it..just not real good at stuff like this.

For God's sake don;t pay 70 or 80 bucks/hour to R&R the speakers!!! I leaned my faring forward w/o unplugging the light./...it'll stay firmly in place against the spot lights. I did unscrew one of the braces in front of the speaker (as viewed from the rear) but that is clear if you need to do that...no issue at all. The fronts are as easy to do as the reasr.
