In the most recent 10k miles i have put on my 09 flhtcu with a basically stock 96" motor it's gotten a best of 50mpg & worst was 39.5mpg that was only once only thing, all other tanks of fuel in oast 10k miles have been 40mpg inc riding some 2 up for over 505 of the rides.
But the bikes averaging 44-44.5mpg on the 150-200mile wk end rides in the countryside which includes a little stop & go traffic @ a few stoplights to deal with along the way too.
Mine , 08 ultra, 103 w/ se255 cams, stock head pipe, V&H slash slip ons.
Yesterday riding 75mph sixth gear straight into heavy wind. 20 mpg. I burned 4.8 gallons in 97 miles. My light came on 3 miles before my exit. I was shocked.
What's the worst you ever got.
That head wind is what did you in.... Was on my way to Las Vegas on I70 driving into a 50 mph headwind. Tacoma normally got over 300 miles per tank. Had to fill up every 120 miles.
As for the bike? 103 with S&S 551. When I push it on back roads not getting much out of 4th gear, mileage goes down to around 30. I'm sure I could lean it out and get more, but why? Bike runs too good.
Anywhere from 30 to almost 45 but anything above 70 mph will start to kill my mileage. I really don't care what I get as long as our gas prices remain the same.

Stop and go Boston traffic I get around 31 - 33 mpg. On weekends, i hit the highway and lock it in at 75 in 6th and get around 38. If I brought it down to 65 in 5th I probably get intothe 40's, but I'm happy with what I got. Bike purrs with heavy breather, v&h monster ovals and a pc5.
30s for mpg?...thats pretty crappy for a bike. Have they gotten worse as the years have gone by? Ive been out of the cycle world for 10+ years and remember my fatty getting 45+.
Toolset, I actually think they have but for good reasons. Bigger engines trying to compensate for loss of power due to required EPA regs. But with the bigger engines, folks are tuning them to run properly which makes awesome power and fun but I think in general you see mpg go down because we are having fun.
