Default Cam Install Question

Yes I know how to use the search button!!! Now that's out of the way, I have one question that I don't see covered much. I have true dual pipes and I am assuming I will only need to take off the front (right side) exhaust pipe. Any reason I would need to take both off.
Also do most of you drain the oil before removing the Cam Cover and chest. It's just another one of those things where I don't recall seeing or anyone say to remove, or drain the oil prior to getting into the cam chest. I'm due for a change so I will be running clean oil either way, just not sure if I should drain everything, remove and replace cams, button everything up, fill with clean oil and start.

I know and older buddy said he thinks its better to leave the old oil in there until everything is done and stared and ran a bit. Then drain all oil and replace filter and oil with new. His reasoning was that it would be harder to sump the oil to lifters because the oil also has to refill all the passageways, lines and filters in addition to the lifters. Sounds logical, but that's why I'm asking.

Id change the oil after doing the cams. If you can get to the cam chest by just removing one of the pipes, that's all I would do

I just did mine and only removed the front pipe. You do not need to (or would you want to) drain the oil from the crankcase. The bit of oil you will see upon removing the camchest cover can easily be contained in a small drip pan and sopped up with paper towels/rags. I would run the bike a few miles before putting fresh oil in the CC. Just top off after you button up the chest and and make a test run. If everything sounds/looks okay then do your oil change.

Your first question after the install will be: "Why did I wait so long?".

On my '15 limited Low I didn't even have to remove the front pipe.... just loosened it enough to swing up out of the way & the cam chest came right off.

I have V&H power duals if that makes a difference.
