Guys, for those that carry an android phone goto the google play store and download the VTWIN app. It has some nice info, but mostly the procedure for entering the code.
I did this once! I called my selling dealer and they said every dealer has their own code, theres was 313131, but I was screwed if I changed the code. Luckily I didnt but I tried that code on a buddys bike that came from another dealer and it worked too, so I wonder if the dealers dont have it as a default. I used to carry the code card in my wallet, which reminds me to check it before my trip.
FWIW, I never tried this but the dealer told me the gas cap IS a universal key, meaning any barrell key will unlock it. My 12 doesnt have the fuel cap lock anyway.
Nice job with problem solving OP! You made a mistake and got it fixed.
This is one of the reasons I really like the security on the new bikes. Something happen to your key? No issues, use the code. Just change that 11111 to something else you will remember.
Lost my fob on the roll on the way out to the Black Hills a month ago. Normally I keep it in a zipped jacket pocket. This time I put it in my front jeans pocket. I also put some short highway notes on the hotel stationary in that pocket. When I went to grab it while riding, I obviously pulled my fob out and it parted company with us. Got to a restaurant and went to grab the fob to lock my luggage and it was gone. Normally I give Cheryl the spare set to carry with her. That was my failure on an established protocol. I was fortunate in that it was our 1st stop. Had it been later, the bags would have been locked and we would have been in real trouble. Grabbed my lap top and came to this forum and looked up the starting procedure. Fortunately, it was 11111. Bike started and we continued. Had Black Hills HD sell me a programmed fob. Couldn't lock the bags for the trip though.
Btw, when they program a fob, not having your spare present, you have a 50/50 chance of the spare fob not working when you get back because they know of two codes - the spare and the lost key. If they program it using the spare code, the spare will not work. Guess how I did on that coin toss?
with all your experience, I can't believe you made that rookie mistake (not setting your override). we can all fall prey to leaving the fob somewhere, and having set your own code, it becomes a very minor nuisance. setting my code, and removing the heel shifter, are two things that I do before my bike even leaves the dealership parking lot.
