Sorry if this has been hashed out before but, I'm changing out my primary fluid. Manual calls for 38 ounces wet. I've been told just throw in a quart and call it good. How many of you just throw in a quart, and how many put in exactly 38 onces.
Thanks In advance Jonnierock
I always fill the primary with approximately 38 oz. It requires a second bottle of oil. The dumping in a quart is from older bikes which did require only 32 oz. My '02 only needed 32 oz.

Is this just to save $$ not buying a 2nd qt of prim case oil?
Just wondering why you would consider using only 32oz / 6oz less in the prim case cutting lubrication short by 6oz for the clutch / compensator etc right off the bat when the mfg states to use 38oz oil in the primary case for a std maint type prim oil change?
Will the bike or mechanical items in the prim case blow up soon after using only 32oz in prim case?
Not likely.
But will all mech items in the prim case be in a better position to fail prematurely / in less miles then normal due to less lubrication avail in prim case?
Absolutely.
And you may not be aware it's a known fact that 1 of the issues with premature compensator failure many HD's have experienced in the past is partly due to reduced & or lack of lubrication @ times & you want to start out with 6oz less oil in the prim case to begin with?
Just makes no sense to me to reduce oil lvl in prim case from stock spec in a stock bike app ,but it's your bike so do what you want.
On a narrow primary 2016 add 34OZ wet. But if everybody says just put a quart in go ahead save the extra 2 OZ's. No wonder so many seem to have compensator issues.
And some don't.
Page 155 owners manual, but then what does Harley know the indy said just add a quart.
38 is for a dry fill

My owners manual says 38 oz. The it goes on to say that if you can see oil at the bottom of the clutch you're good. I saw it at the bottom of the clutch with 32oz so I figure I'm good.
