I needed my stock windshield replaced on my Road King and my indy talked me into a slightly shorter one. ( he's tall. I'm 5'8" ) I regret it. With the old one, in my normal slouched and comfortable riding position, I looked through it right under the edge. In rain, I could sit up straight and easily see over it. The new shorter windshield is technically the perfect height for me but the buffeting has increased slightly. Not terrible but I do feel it more.
When I first bought the bike, I had a real bad problem with buffeting but that was fixed by adding the wind deflector that goes between the forks just under the tank.
Good luck. Getting it just right can be trial and error and once you go too far cutting it down, you can't put it back on.
LRS and the other windshield manufacturers have instructions on their websites on how to measure for correct height.
I'm 5'11" and ride an 07 Ultra Classic and run a 10" LRS recurve shield. I look through it out to about 50 feet or so and over it past that. It has completely eliminated the buffeting I had with a slightly taller factory shield. It does not eliminate all of the wind, who really expects that on a bike?, but the buffeting is gone.
well i cut it. now its 18". a lot better than it was. if i sit in between straight up and slouched over im looking above the top.seems to be inline with my mustache. like i stated, its better than it was. ill have to go for a ride to make sure.
you see i never had a bike with a fairing or windshield. this bike came with a Hoppe 5566 fairing. when test driving it, and driving it home, i was looking though the windshield, so i figured that was how it was suppose to be. when i decide to put the batwing back on ill have to get a measurement on it and get the correct one.
If you get head buffeting (the dreaded head shake) on the 18", then get an 18" with a recurve. LRS and Clearview make them and that recurve gets you back that extra 2" in airflow.
My EG has the stock factory windshield. Roughly 12.5" rise above the top fairing edge. At 5'9' the tip of the windshield is just above my straight ahead sight line. A slight up tip of my head to look over the top of it usually at night. Not a lot of turbulence behind it either.
