What exactly is rattling? The front arm, rear arm, or is it the linkage?

You have a couple of options. You can loosen your shifter and slide it inboard a little to take up some of the free play, just don't go so far that you bind it up. The other is more involved. It involves replacing the bushing that shaft runs through.

I often have my boot against the shifter- yours could have more than average wear on the bushing

wonder if removing and wrapping the rod with teflon plumbing tape could help you

My rattling turned out to be the stock linkage, not the lever. Specifically the front connection. Replaced with a heim joint, no more rattling.

I took the shift levers off and slid an o-ring on the splined shaft and put the levers back on.

I found some plastic washers that achieved the same effect, taking out the end play. In my older bike I also replaced the bushings, but I have the stock grease nipple, with which I can inject plenty of water-proof grease. In addition I replaced the stock shifter rod with a stainless one, which came with better pivots. The whole lot is much more satisfactory!

Bought new bushings but how in the world do you get the old ones out. They won't budge

Thanks everybody . I took a hacksaw blade and cut a slice in te front one and it came right out. Then took a deep well socket and drove the rear one out. Then put in a zerk fitting. Got the new ones in and no more rattle
