One more thing, "Lane Sharing" is legal in Cali. If you're not going to do it, be especially careful of the bikes that do. Normally bikes will split traffic down the #1 and #2 lanes. Be safe and have a great time.

As has been mentioned, drink LOTS of water. Heat stroke is no joke and if you've never ridden in the desert before, you really have no idea how the heat will suck the moisture from your body. Also, CA and NV are both helmet law states.....

Load up on water. No joke, it can be brutal in the desert.

When everyone says leave early in the morning, I say leave and be on the highway at 4 am. By 8 am you will be dropping down into the California basin. Also consider those cooling neck ties that you soak in water and then fasten around your neck.Get a speciality super absorbent towel for each of you just to wipe your face. Good advice in covering up with cotton. Sun and wind exposure is brutal. Carry about 3 or 4 liters of water for each of you. Everytime you stop, drink water. Really good sun glasses are a must. I use polarized when out in the desert. If you are using anything but a full faced helmet, consider a face covering bandanna. Get a small road atlas for the California Highway system. It confuses even the native Californians. ..... BC

Maps? Wuts that? Buy a GPS and mount it on yer handle bars. In the rush of LA traffic you will be hard pressed to pull over and read them and its a maze down there. Just remember even numbered highways generally run east west, odd number highways generally go north south.

...Now if you really want to see the PRETTY side of California take PCH (Hwy1) north from about Pt Huneme and go as far north as Mendacino. THATS CALIFORNIA.

Thanks for the tips, they are all much appreciated, and will definitely help this city couple survive the trip...

I actually just ordered the Garmin Zumo 550 from Amazon last night, there must be a price drophappening, because it is costing me $711 brand new delivered to my door. As the wife said, we'll just add it to the cost of the vacation. Plus, I still get a couple of nights out in Vegas to boot! Man, she's a keeper!!

If you are going to be in Vegas on Friday or Saturday night be sure and visit the HD Cafe on the strip and say hello. Lots of other riders there on the weekends, nice crowd no problems. You can watch all the crazy tourists best free entertainment in the world.

GPSunits are popluar and do work well - However, esp in LA traffic - if the GPS is on - DO NOT take your eyes off the road to read the GPS while moving - In LA traffic you will need all you can muster to watch the traffic...

Going straight from Las Vegas to Costa Mesa you will be far south of Los Angeles. You'll only need to worry if you travel north once down here.

Lot's of nice riding south of Costa Mesa so if you have no real reason to head north don't.

Been riding in L.A. area for 25+ years. Don't let some of the posts scare ya.

Your bottom line actually says alot - you've gotten used to the traffic - someone from an area with only light traffic will be in for a rude awaking in LA - best advice is to know Exactly where you are headed and read the signs...

You are correct in that Costa Mesa area has some great riding south...
