Compression release question
Having compression release ports put in my 09 96 cylinder heads. I would really like to put the ACR type that the newer 103's use. Is that an option on a 96 head or is the placement in the combustion chamber a problem or performance limitation. I know the 103 has a slight slot milled into the combustion chamber to position the solenoid in the middle of the head. Thanks in advance for any info... Mike
I don't know all the details but my indy machined my heads and put the ACR's on my 08 when he upgraded it to a 103. There was an additional wiring harness he had to get as well as going into the ECM to turn them on.
Lot of guys put the manual ones on that you have to reach down and push the button in. If I can I'd like to just put the electric solenoids on. You can just wire into the starter solenoid circuit I would think instead of programming the ECM. I have a DynoJet PowerVision tuner so that may be an option to do within that. I just wasn't sure if the 96 head combustion chamber shape is the same a the 103 and you could put the release valves inboard of the head instead of out by the spark plug.
Wire them through the "Start" switch"
Hardest thing about it was finding a dealer with the tool (Screamin’ Eagle Automatic Compression
Release Tool, part # 94648-08) that would do it (and I trusted.)
Wired it up with the Harley harness ( 70623-06 or 70623-08, depending on application.)
Had the dealer freshen up the heads while they were at it, about $500 total, I did the removal and install of the the heads.
The PV can turn on the ACRs.
Other options; manual releases (cheaper) or Easy Start cams.

I just got some 103 take offs and the harness for my 107 build. The harness was like $60 bucks or so. Your heads can be machined if the shop has the jig for it. Not all do when I was asking around. The jig is like $900 so I was told and not a lot of people ask for it. They use the manuals and there were only a few years where they were able to be added.

If I were going to send heads out to get ACR's, I would have them ported at the same time.
It's $250 for these guys to drill ACR's and $400 for a street port. They may have 103 ported heads ready that they would swap out so you wouldn't have to wait too long on them.
