Default Highest Engine Temp?

Afternoon,

Just returned from my first Daytona Bike Week. Had a great time taking it all in and can't wait for Biketoberfest!

Riding my 2016 Street Glide Special with 3k miles on it.

Rode down main street a few times last Friday night when the air temperature was still in the 80s at 9pm. I was stuck in the stop and go traffic before, during and after for about an hour. Had my Vance and Hines Fuelpack App running during that time and my engine temperature was over 300 for mostly the duration of that hour. I even saw it creep to 380 at one point before I stopped and let it cool. But even when I fired it back up it only got down to 340. My legs were cooking!!

Did I fry the oil or hurt the motor in some way??? I'm running Mobile One.

This being my first Bike Week, I'm just thinking I'm not the only one stuck in that traffic in and out of main street with their engine temperature skyrocketing.

I rode main street the next day in the afternoon and was stuck in even longer traffic with more stand still times with the motor running so it had to be even hotter possibly. I wasn't running the app this time because I didn't want to know how hot the motor was getting!

Rode the bike home and all seems fine, but wondering if I should change the oil.

i believe the fp3 is displaying head temp not engine temp. it picks up the temp via the diagnostic connector and use the temp sensor reading off the front head.

380 is hot and probably cooked your oil a bit. m1 is rated up to 500 degrees so while your ok cause its synethic, if your close to mileage i would change if not you probably are not hurting anything. i just would not run it past 5k.

I drop the oil after situations like that. I probably don't have to but it's not that expensive and quick to do. These things don't like stop and go riding much. They roast the crap out of you.

With out the wet heads I have seen the 103 an 96 get to 360 in heavy long traffic on a hot day . No big deal. The readings you are getting is a head temp. Change oil and ride . If it worries you one of the several jug cooling fans will help some. Might help you sleep .
Had a 2016 with wet heads and now the M8 that is liquid cooled a system is a little different than the first wet heads.

I'm not sure on the newer bikes, but my 2011, when I got stuck in a traffic jam, when it was hot, the computer went into limp mode, saving the bike from damage, I suppose they still have that feature, but not sure%100

I would change oil but you didn't hurt anything. You'll get more enjoyment once you quit watching all the numbers on tuner.

Oil is cheap (in comparison to your motor) change it.
If you want an answer to your question send some oil in to be tested.

Are you sure it was limp mode, and NOT the EITMS (sometimes referred to as "parade mode")? Wayyy different, and it's not cool if your bike is going into limp mode just because of a traffic jam!

Limp mode is a result of a malfunction in TBW. 2011 had parade mode. It shut down rear cyl if you did not move the throttle.
It was not to protect the engine but to make ride more comfortable.
Now they call it EITMS
