Take a hard look at a Road Glide or a Road King. Also, shop Craigslist. There are some good deals there and you'll avoid dealer markups and bargaining. With a private sale you should avoid sales tax too. And, you only live once. Have some fun ...

We were almost there a couple years ago. She was going to sign up for an ABATE course then I planned to get her a Honda Rebel to start out on, then from there the plan was a Sporster after a season or so. But in the end, my concern (and her's too) about the exact things you mention above led us to decide that she loved riding on the back and we should keep it that way. At 56, I think it was the best decision for us.
