Neil, seriously, you worry too much. 88's are pretty bullet-proof. Just ride. They make all kinds of noises
Probably not the valves but the valve train. Fairly common situation. Syn oil will tend to make it worse.
You could do lot's of things to quieten it down some like new lifters, adjustable p-rods providing more preload, certain rocker shaft locking devices, etc.
can't say it will help yours, but I started running seafoam in the gas and the top sounds much better. can't say why, just know what I know. will not argue the point.
kroozeabout.
My 01 RK makes a lot of noise on top but so did my old shovel heads. I always used adjustable push rods but I haven't put them in my RK yet. I just make sure I get a good adjustment on them and leave it. They will always make noise unless you throw a lot of money at it and that might not even fix it. When it's hot out they really clatter, that's a Harley. Just enjoy the ride.
I'd check the spring loaded cam chain tensioners. They're 11 years old; yeah not many miles but that really doesn't mean anything. Drop the exhaust, pull the cam cover and at least look.
I rode my 08 RK to FL from CA a few weeks ago. It turned 80k on the way home. Out there I decided to have fluids changed at a reputable speed shop. Tech called with concern for noise out of the primary. I gave the go ahead and he replaced the compensator which was making to racket. Needless to say HD has no replacement in kind but offer a Screaming Eagle kit. Problem solved with wallet.
You need a good set off pipes so that you can't hear the engine anymore. That will fix it. Good set of ear buds in the helmet works good too.
As mentioned. A little sewing machine noise or ticking from the valve train is normal. Ride the crap out of it.
After you have put some miles on it, you will get used to the "normal' sounds and then be able to tell if the noise is getting new. You also need to remember that the sounds carry different based on many factors. Road surface, wind, traffic around you, helmet on or off, windshield on or off, etc. So sometimes what you think is a new noise is something that has been there all along, just different circumstances.
Also as mentioned, regular oil is normally quieter than synthetic. Give and take.
