New member with question. I recently purchased an 08 Electra Glide Classic from a dealership. As soon as I purchased it, I also purchased a detach kit for the tour-pak and left those items with the dealership to install after service. I got a call from the service manager saying they was unable to install the kit, because, unknown to them, 06-08 models of my bike were not setup for this detach kit.
Does this sound right? Is there an aftermarket kit available?
Unknown to them!?
Isn't that their job?
I have 10 and I know the hardware changes on both the bike and the tour pack but not an issue. Not sure what would be different in 08.
Did the dealer know your intent when you bought?
I love my now detachable pack, it's rarely on.
I would have changed bikes if it was a no go.
Actually come to think of I looked at an 07 or an 08 before I bought my 10 and it came with a detachable tour pack.
So I'd think it should be doable.
Check another dealer
Weeboy, the salesman and service manager knew of my intent, but I dont think they knew about this 06-08 situation. They got it tore apart before they realized it would not work. The dealership accepted the items back with out a problem. Told me that it could be taken off, but I would have a lot of wires hanging loose that would need to be tied up. Also said that the way these years were built, I would have an unsightly gap exposed that I might not be happy with. My thoughts in purchasing this style bike, was to have something that allowed me to remove the tour-pak for those days I wanted a more sleeker look and then be able to snap it back on for the days the wife and I ride together. Since I purchased HD parts, I was looking to see if there was an after market kit available.
Do you per chance have rear speakers on the tour pak? I'm going to assume that you did not purchase an Electra Glide Classic as the kit would work. I'm betting you have an Ultra Classic which the kit is not designed for. However, you can make it work.
When stating that it can be made to work on an Ultra Classic, you would probably have to do it yourself as the dealer generally will not go against the grain on things like that.
It does have speakers, am/FM and CB antennas. FLHTCU, Ultra Classic Electra Glide. So, the dealership was correct, no kit is available?
Technically, there is not a kit specifically for the pre-09 ultra. You can use the same kit as for an FLHTC, but you just have to address the speakers. Read this THREAD to understand.
