I've been whining about this issue that I'm having with my EG UC for awhile now. I keep hearing this squeeling noise occasionally when riding.
I've pretty much replaced everything in the primary drive, i.e. stator, rotor, compensating sprocket, chain tensioner, IPB and race.
I took it over to an independent repair shop near me(who only works on Harleys). I couldn't reproduce the noise while just reving the bike. One thing the mechanic told me and I don't know how true this statement is but, he asked me if I downshift a lot. I told him yes, I do to slow down. He stated that these bikes aren't meant to be downshifted if it causes the bike to rise over 500 rpms during the downshift. He then told me to just ride it and use the brakes.
Anyhoo... I rode away and noticed that I do hear the noise occasionally when I let out the clutch when I'm downshifting and now I'm wondering how much truth there was in what the mechanic told me.
Also, now I'm wondering if there is a bearing that is starting to fail in either the clutch pack or something else in the tranny.
What do I think? That your indy gave you poor advice! I always change down through the gears and have done for over 50 years, most of those on Harleys. I don't only the use the brakes while riding or driving and never have - it goes against everything I was ever taught! When changing down always raise the engine revs, to synchronise engine with trans, but you are probably doing that anyway.

Find another indy!
I'm beginning to think you're right. To answer your question, yes, I do downshift to sync engine and tranny. I still don't know what the squeeling noise is though. It's kind of a metallic noise and I'm only hearing it now when the clutch is engaged or briefly when I pull in the clutch lever(disengaging).
I'm going to try and post up a video when I get time WHEN I can reproduce it.
