Thank You earplugs
Aftermarket lifters and adjustable push rods also can help. The cheapest way to reduce some of it is with a heavier oil in the summer months.
Every weekend I've been going on rides where there is open road. I average 185-200 miles on a day trip. I did a 2-up last month for 550 over the weekend with a 750 mile ride planned for next weekend.
To date I bought the bike on March 15 with 1482 miles and I now have over 3300 on it. Didn't ride it really for the first month of ownership but I think I am making some good progress. Certainly not as many miles as some but I'm getting there.
I figure the rockouts are an inexpensive attempt as long as the labor rates don't kill me. Anyone know how long it takes to install the rockouts?
When I bought my '03 Heritage, I decided to leave the windshield on... wow, I heard engine noises I never knew existed...!! The windshield certainly seems to amplify engine noises... I took the windshield off....!
Now that I live where it's impossible to go anywhere without some freeway riding, I put the windshield back on, with a shorter recurve windshield, ... I finally got used to the "new" engine noises...

Mine makes noticeable tap tap type noise (103 motor) between 1600 and 1200 rpm (a range of rpm where you are decelerating the engine to slower speed and or preparing to downshift). After 1700 rpm up through 2300 rpm, quiet as a church mouse (really), then 2400 + rpm, a little noise, quickly overcome by the wind after 60 mph. At idle, almost no noise of any kind.
Part of stage 2 upgrade at 39K miles was SE 255 cams, new lifters, and adjustable pushrods. This made no change at all in the noise profile I just mentioned, which was a kind of a surprise.
I have ran without heat shields, different slip ons, removed and reinstalled exhaust header pipes, and checked all engine mount hardware. I work at a dealer so this is easy to do.

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
This isn't quite correct. My own bike developed the noise in just a few months, after starting out quiet.
