Have you considered an AirHawk pad ? I have a gel insert in my seat and it was good for the first 7-8 years but I'm not comfortable on it any longer. The gel might be OK, it's probably old age creeping up on me. I tried an Airhawk pad and it's amazing. I didn't have to get a different seat and it only raised me about 3/8". I honestly cannot tell the difference when I'm stopped with my feet down. You can find them used on CL for around $50.

Can't comment on gel. ****ed around with so many things on my 06 Fat Boy before settling on a Mustang. For my 16 Street Glide Special I went with the Hammock right off the lot. Best thing out of everything else I tried. Of course, the bike comparison isn't apple to apple.

My wish for today is that HD would build a Solo Hammock.

I had same problem with my 06. Foam crushed down and I was setting on the seat pan. Felt like a bad night in prison. Tried a few seats (Corbin, Danny Gray, HD memory foam), with no help. I liked some, but mamma didnt, so spent a chunk of change to have a gel insert installed in stock seat. Much improvement, bet the gel is no softer. It supports better, and prevented me from setting on the pan, but still mighty firm. Finally broke down and bought a Mustang Touring seat. Solved my problem. Lots of seat space for mamma and me. A bit more than the stocker. While the stock seat is rounded in the seat area, the Mustang is flat, giving good support. Love it!

It was the Saddlemen Gel inserts that I used and they worked great. The bike could be sitting in a parking lot for hours in 90*+ heat and the seat wouldn't be any hotter than a stock one. Maybe other brands do get hot.
To the OP: Hope the Hammock works out for you. It's been great for me and the wife.

I am actually thinking very seriously about getting a Russell Day Long seat made up next winter. All those Iron Butt riders can't be wrong. I have heard mixed reviews about most seats, but bad reviews of RDL seats are few and far between. They look a little different, but as one poster said, at some point it has to be about function over fashion. The wife and I ride enough that I am willing to spend the money to get the best.
