Interesting guys. Seems everybody is on one side or the other. I need to read the other thread.
I live in the UK, where we don't get anything like the benefits you chaps do. However I'm a Founder Member, having joined in 1983 and bought Life Membership way back, when the exchange rate was in my favour! If you get a free year when buying a new bike it is certainly worth investigating what the various benefits are, to see if they will be of interest to you.
I have been a member for a few years. The dealer that I bought my RGS from has HOG chapter that is free, the dealer by my house HOG is not free. I joined the free one But the rides have been during times I have had pre-planned events. Going to one this Sunday though. Is it worth it? Up to you.
This Thursday is the next meeting and I already have plans. so maybe the next months meeting I will see what is going on and attend. The people that I do know are really involved and love it. They are both retired, so they have the time to do everything. Not me though, I work allot. so the weekday rides are mostly out.
I'm a HOG member. After reading this thread, I changed my insurance to the HD insurance, and my rate went down $200 per year.
The "HD" Insurance (I believe and have been told) is just Progressive. So you might as well just call Progressive yourself, tell them you are an HOG member and then bundle your home/auto and save even more money.
The 2 Dealerships that I frequent have HOG chapters which are comprised of clickish, old people.
Years ago, I was interested I seeing what HOG was about but these old f'kers pretend that they're a secret club. Most I've seen them do is a hotdog bbq at the local dealer.
Join if you want the discounts. But find a crew who you bond with to ride with. Riding with strangers is always a recipe for disaster.
I didn't get any value out of my free year of HOG, so I let it lapse. Been two years now since then and I don't miss it a bit. Got no value out of the benefits. Not interested in any local HOG activities, haven't got the time for any additional event stuff..
