Default Which cam

Have an 08 ultra 41000 miles. Thinking of doing cams over winter (dealer install). Mostly ride in 2500-3000 rpm range, would like more power from1500-3000 rpm range. Which cams recrommend and why? Thanks

The Andrews 48H is an excellent choice for a low and mid-range torque boost in a 96-inch bagger.

Upgrade your lifters while you're at it.

48s are great in 96, easily over 100 ft lbs if tuned correctly.

57s with 4 degree advance will also work. someone on here did them and had great results. gives you an option if you go 103 later.

hd lifters are prone to failure and should be replaced about 15 to 20k.

s&s lifters (premiums) are great replacement choice

If your bike is a keeper , and your only installing a good bolt in cam, that is tried and true, the Andrews 48 in a 96ci gets my tick .... If you dont wont to go aftermarket, a set of SE255's take offs can be got cheap, and will also put a smile on your face in the rpm you are looking for.... As you have 43,000 miles on her ,, Replace lifters,,, There seems to be a knock for Harley lifters,,, All I can say to that is, you have 42k on her ,, have you had any trouble with the harley lifters ???

I would replace stock pushrods for adjustable pushrods .... Your call ...
Install new inner cam bearings ... Absolutely ....
Check cam tensioners ,, at your mileage ,, I would replace them ...
Check oil pump ,,, replace if major scoring ....
Check cam plate ,,, should be good ....
All gaskets and oil orings ,,, replace .....
A good tune .... Absolutely ....

There can be other things that may need attention ,,,, Your clutch .... If your clutch plates are fine ,,, a heavy duty clutch spring can be a good addition with the added power .... Enjoy the upgrade .....Cheers ....

Conventional wisdom definitely points to the Andrews 48 for a TC96, especially if you're looking for low/mid range power. But given you specified 1500-3000 is there another cam 1 step below the 48 that might be a better fit? Road Star mentioned the Andrews 26 that sounds spot on:

"Bolt-in cam 96 - 103 inches and stock compression ratio. Great for two up touring, this cam will add torque and HP at lower and middle RPM ranges. (1800-5200 RPM).

I looked hard at the Andrews 48, but ended up going a different route with my 96" RKC, as I wanted more power from 2500-5000, so I chose the Wood 555. Definitely not the right cam for your use case, nor is the Wood 222, which is a little larger than the 48.

Good luck with whatever you decide, I spent way too much time researching every cam thread I could find here before I made my decision. You might want to call Andrews directly to talk about your intended use as they were helpful when I was doing my homework.

If the ultra is the same as the sg id get rid of that 66 tooth pulley. And go with the Andrews 48h cam. There is a thread on hear with the pn for the Japanese sportster 08 rear pulley that is a perfect fit. I went with the 48h and wasn't happy with it til the pulley was changed. Those 2 mods will make you smile every time you twist the throttle.

I put the Andrews 48 in my 96. A scenario where this cam shines, two Lane road, 65 mph, 6th gear, feet on the highway pegs. Come up to a truck hauling scrap metal, you want to pass, roll the throttle and fly by, no hesitation, no downshifting. It quickly climbs past 100 mph.
