Default Odd engine light issue

So, I own a 2002 RKC with about 33k miles on it. Bought used. Have had it for about a year, I have put 6k miles on it so far. The previous owner had it all serviced at the local dealer, so I have all the maintenance records. There are no upgrades on it, its still an 88. That all being said, I had an odd thing happen yesterday, and was just wondering if anyone else ever experienced this.
So, yesterday, I start my bike up. Goes through the normal prestart lights, no issues.
Starts up fine, no issues.
After about 5 seconds, the engine light illuminates. After 10 seconds, it then goes off, and stays off. I rode it last night and today, to double check, but it never comes back on during operation.
It does do that weird cycle every time though. No matter if its warm, or cold. It illuminates shortly after starting up, stays on for 10 seconds, then goes off.
I checked the oil, that looked fine.
Any other suggestions? I dont think it is throwing an actual code, so I havent checked that yet. I just wanted to see if anyone else has had that problem and what, if they did, the solution was.

Sounds like a code to me. I'd check for historical codes and clear them/correct the issue that caused the code, etc.

Do I need a code reader? Or is there a button sequence I can access it with?

1. Remove right side saddlebag and side cover if so equipped. Remove protective plug from data link connector. Other models will be under the seat.

2. To activate the diagnostic feature, follow these steps.
a. Create diagnostic test wire or use a female spade clip which will bridge the two terminals perfectly.
b. Install diagnostic test wire/clip across Terminals 1 and 2 on the data link connector, they are marked.
c. Turn Ignition/Light Key Switch to IGNITION and wait approximately 10 seconds (4 seconds lamp ON, 6 seconds lamp OFF) for check engine lamp to start flashing.

3. All trouble codes are sent out as a series of flashes. To retrieve the first digit of the trouble code simply observe the number of times the lamp flashes.
a. The lamp will then flash one or more times to indicate the first digit of the trouble code.
b. The length of time the lamp is illuminated and the length of time in which it is off are each about 0.5 second in duration.

4. The second digit follows:
a. Following the transmission of the first digit, there is a 1.2 second pause in which the lamp is off.
b. The lamp will then flash one or more times to indicate the second digit of the trouble code. Count the number of times the lamp flashes to retrieve the second digit.

5. If more than one trouble code is sent:
a. Following transmission of the second digit of the first code, there is a 3 second pause in which the lamp is off.
b. Once all codes have been sent, the data string is repeated. When you have recorded the same trouble code twice, it is an indication that the transmission has been restarted and that all trouble codes have been retrieved.

IMPORTANT NOTE ..If diagnostic test wire is installed across Pins 1 and 2 on connector in lieu of a Scanalyzer, the ECM is placed in a diagnostic test mode and the engine will start. The test wire must be removed from the data connector and the ignition switch turned OFF or the check engine lamp will continue to flash codes. A historic trouble code resides in the memory of the ECM until the code is cleared by use of the Scanalyzer or a total of 50 trips has elapsed. A “trip” consists of a start and run cycle, the run cycle lasting at least 30 seconds. After the 50 trip retention period, the trouble code is automatically erased from memory (that is, assuming no subsequent faults of the same type are detected in that period).

The first number is the ranking number. The numbers after the 'historic' or 'current' is the speedo CEL (check engine lamp) code number (lamp flash count), but without the electrical diagnostics manual you're not going to know what they mean.

Guys, I need help.
I have a Night Train 2000 that has been experiencing problems with unoperated engine shutdown. I checked the error codes that the ECM has on the speedometer, I got three errors: 12 MAP sensor open / low, 12 MAP sensor high, 41 CKP sensor intermittent, 41 CKP sensor synch error, 41 Ignition switch open / low, and an error 44 that is not in the error table. Does anyone have experience in the exact interpretation of these errors? Any help will be very helpful.

Gerson,
Welcome to the site.
Your bike being a 2000 year model, I’d check each related connections for corrosion and plug integrity. You can remove and wipe off the crank position sensor to see if that changes (metallic debris on the sensor can cause errors)), but the MAP sensor....just replace it.
Same for the Crank PS, replace it if there’s no change after cleaning.
The other errors for ignition switch and the weird 44 error may just go away when the others are sensors are renewed. You’ll be the first to know.

*NOTE* Start yourself a new thread specific to your trouble for better response. Good luck.

Crank position sensor and MAP sensor....

I can see if it does not know where the crank is why it can't tell the coils when to create spark

That is the old MM FI system in that bike, if it is good luck.... you are going to need it.

20 year old system that HD stopped supporting years ago, my HD Guru would be ripping the FI out and putting a carb on it, I know he has said there is a rework of the ignition system of some sort required, but he made it seem that it is the easiest way around a MM FI issue.

Check the wires, check the connectors, go from there
