Frame damage
yeah, i did start the claim process, but i haven't done anything other than have a claim number assigned. no adjuster till the first week in October. like i said earlier, i now a great welder. i might just do it that way. it wasn't an accident, it was a road hazard, isn't there a difference?
OP/Tom,
Sorry to hear about your debris hit on the WW bridge. I was stationed at Bolling AFB fm 1995-2000 and that cross-over was "always" riddled w/$hit. Personally, I had to replace a windshield on my primary vehicle (something flew-up fm car in front) & a co-worker had a "driveshaft" impale through the rear/underbelly of his car (literally launched in air...similar to your hit). Hoping your bud/insurance throws you a bone and either (1) full frame repair, or (2) total bike. Keep us posted & be safe on those "crazy" DC Metro roads. I don't miss them one bit.

i haven't had the opportunity to talk to my agent yet i'd like to get his "off the record" advice and hopefully our long time friendship will provide two avenues of action....one as a customer and one as what he might do.
Yes there is with Allstate, at least here in PA. Even hitting a deer is not considered against your premiums. Did $4500 of damage on my old Dodge Ram and my rates stayed the same. I would ask your agent, usually they will tell you if it could affect your rates and if it does then you have the choice not to claim it (take the check). Just getting a claim number from them won't automatically raise your rates.

Isn't it classed as an "act of god", as long as your god is not Diana?
(* That's one for the Roman historians there).
I'll be interested to see how this pans out, so please let us know. If you end up with a new frame, it'll always be a plus when it comes to sell. For an extra $200s or so, it makes sense to swop out the tranny pan "just in case".
Got anything else to do while the engine is being taken out of the frame, e.g. change the pulley/gearing, fit a Tour-trak, pay the upgrade for a Baker pan?
I can't but help think how luck you've been ... a split second either way and it could have gone through one of your cases.
I had a similar accident once and pulled a sump plug right out of an engine. Pretty much dumped all the engine oil on the rear tire straight away. Thought I had a flat the way it was weaving around. Luckily I caught the oil light as soon as it lit up. The only time in my life I'd seen one actually work. Put the all blame on dating a too fat chick squashing the suspension down that time! Insurance companies should have a clause against them.

My deer hits here have all been treated as comprehensive claims by State Farm, no foul.
I have heard of some insurance companies regarding just about anything as "Incidents" that may raise your rates at some time based on some funky azz formula.

If you look closely at where the cross piece ties to the frame you there is a crack running along the tube.. While this can be repaired most shops will want to replace the frame... The main purpose of the cross brace is to keep the frame from spreading at the swing arm mount point..
Around here... If the object hit was laying in the road, it's the drivers fault.. If it's moving, it doesn't go against the drivers insurance.
Pretty sure that's just cracked paint being pushed off by the rust.
It looks like a crack to me.. Should be easy to see in person.. You can see a place where the metal displaced between the 2 tears..
This is just an aside, not necessarily specific advice for this case, when such a thing happens, it's often possible to use it as an opportunity to carry out an "upgrade" rather than carry the burden of a fault.
For example, replacing the webbing - or part therefo - with a proper strut/square section tube and, as I suggested before, a built in alternative to what you pay $100s to True-Trak etc to bolt on.
That way you can still sell the bike but with a plus rather than a minus.
More of an option where you have to live with it, or pay for it yourself, rather than be bailed out by the insurance company.
The math all comes down to what they say and how much discount he has to lose, over how many policies. It is possible to come out ahead of the insurance companies - but not very often.
In my case, it would go as a strike against the rider. Have they offered to total the bike yet?
