I did mine last winter. I bought a James primary gasket set which came with everything you need. Shifter shaft seal, main shaft seal plus more. I did not care for the main shaft seal, so I bought a harley one. Also there is a small O ring on the main shaft replace that also.
And while I was at it, I replaced the inner primary bearing with a Baker one.
If you don't have a manual get one!!!! I found a used one on ebay.

I think this potential leak source is only on the '09 and newer touring bikes like you and I have. The OP's bike is a bit older, so this might not be applicable here.

Hope this helps,

My 99 came loose on the trap door. So I would think any twin cam can.

You guys are awesome. Thanks for all the replies. I'll be cleaning up and taking the bike out a little bit later today and attempt to determine exactly where this pesky leak is coming from.

Guess this leak will be added to the Winter Project list.

No one has mentioned the stator grommet on the front of the primary. Those are very, very prone to leaking and can look like a tranny leak. It's probably not your leak given ypur mention of fluid color but it would be a shame to tear the whole primary apart if that's all it was.
If that's what it turns out to be there's a quick, inexpensive DIY fix instead of the Harley fix of replacing the stator to stop a grommet leak.

ORradtech, this is a good call too for the OP to check. It's another leak that I've had on mine. A small tube of black RTV sealed it up for far less cost than an upgraded stator.

I guess this confirms it!!! Bore-scope from underneath showing the shifter shaft going into the transmission. Gasket set will be ordered along with all the other "Ya might as wells" to handle the rest while I'm in there....

Thanks guys!!!! (oh, video clip below)

Do the inner primary bearing while you have it apart..........
Look at the baker it does away with the race. Need a press....to do it right.
If you take the inner cover to a Indy the bearing replacement cost should not to bad.
My maint. dept. at work had a small press....easzy...

Default 1985 wideglde leaking a reddish color fluid

I have a 1985 wideglide that is leaking a reddish pinkish color fluid underneath the middle of the bike (odd place for a leak), what can it be?? could it be fork leak, brake leak, tranny leak?
