How much weight do you guys put in your trunks and on the trunk rack? I don't want to cause the trunk lid to crack or anything else for that matter. Just got an '07 EG. I have Always used a T-bag and luggage rack on my other bike. Leaving on a trip next Wednesday. Thanks in advance.
On long trips I have filled the trunk plus a bag on top rack filled up pretty much very over weight. The only thing I found was handleing was a little harder due to the top weight.
So had to be a slight more careful on curves at 70 plus.
Yeah, it's plenty sturdy. Even on my leather tour pak I've loaded the thing up with crap that was higher then my wife's head during our last 2500 mi trip - leather touring bag, 2 pairs chaps, 2 leather jackets, water bag, several hundred (it seems) Harley dealership t-shirts, etc. It was so heavy I could hardly open the darn thing and get it closed again. Just make sure everything is strapped down good.
I'm leaving S. Florida Sunday for NY via the Smokey Mountains. My tour pak is loaded with Camera gear. Gotta be at least 50 lbs. The Tbags, passenger seat bag another 50. I put the Dakota T bag on top of the rack but I make sure it's only half full and all light stuff. If I decide to take my jacket off I can stow it in the Dakota. Also room for anything I may pick up on the road. The saddlebags are probably over weight also with tools, tire kits, 12 volt tire pump, rain gear, bike cover, extra ammo, goggles etc. etc. I took a practice ride the other day and it was pretty windy. With all that extra area it moved the bike around pretty good. Also I take those extra bags off the ends of the Dakota to get a better rear view. I'd love to be able to weigh the whole bike to see how much I'm overloaded. I think it will take a lot but I'd be careful until you get used to how it handles.
I think the published weight limitation is more for handling than the strength of the trunk and saddle bags. Like one guy said, piled high and heavy made for different handling characteristics. Personally, I travel pretty light so probably don't get over 25 pounds in the trunk or 15 pounds in the saddle bags.
Good point on the handling issues. Weight on the tour pak and rack raises the center of gravity of the bike. One "trick", if you can do it, is to load as much of the heavy stuff as possible into the saddle bags to keep the CG as low as possible.
