I've done every oil change on my 2 bikes ever since they were purchased new for the reasons in some of the posts above.

As for your particular concern: what I would do at the next oil change [by yourself hopefully] I would clean the threads on the plug and in the case. Then carefully screw the plug in by hand and pay attention if there is any unusual 'drag' from previous cross-threading or 'looseness' from being put in with dirt or other crap on the threads . . . basically cutting the threads on the aluminum case oversize.

If all checks out, replace the o-ring and feel confident that at least there is nothing wrong with the plug and case. Snug the plug properly by feel if you feel confident, or use a torque wrench.

It wasn’t the mistake of not tightening the plug that is getting the sour comments...it was the BS excuse that was given rather than owning up to it. Now that they have, seems all is well.

Understood bro. Whoever offered those initial excuses did themselves no favors for sure. They were caught on their heels and made a dumb comment. It happens. Ultimately the Dealer did the right thing. Not every outfit does. Shouldn't be that rare but it is. Its an unfortunate sign of our times when decency is so rare you feel like applauding it no ?

Yeah..Speaking from experience teflon tape is a terrible idea. Split my oil pan from the threads clear through the pan.

T tape has been warned about on Fix My Hog too. I use teflon paste as they suggest and there doesn't appear to be issues with that.

Threads/bolts don't loosen up unless they are striped.
Sounds like the bolt was not tightened.
