Rebuild kit
OP, I sense that maybe you are recalling the days when you could actually buy a rebuild kit for your American car or truck engine, that was pretty much all-inclusive. However, I can't recall ever having seen one for a Harley...probably because with all the hot rod options out there, nobody would ever buy one!
But, I digress...back to your original issue...It sounds like you've picked up a used bike that doesn't live up to your standards, and now you're looking at some very expensive rebuilding...if you're gonna have to rebuild or replace the engine, pretty much right away, you're going to be far more into it than you can get out of it. I would suggest that if this is a concern...and it may not be, some guys just don't want to throw a good machine away, I get that...you probably oughta consider getting a good used engine. Unless you are buying one from someone you know, that's ALWAYS gonna be a pig in a poke.
Rebuilding the top end might actually make sense...but if it includes a bottom end job, I'd step away and think about things first...
