Have a 2009 Road King standard. Looking for hard bag guards, all kinds found for '97-'08 and 2014-'18. what is the difference from the '09 to '13? Is it something simple I can just mod. (there was no guards at all on bike when I bought this, used) TY for any assistance
The 09 and later bikes have an entirely new frame compared with earlier models up to 2008, then there were further changes in 2014. I've not seen the bars alongside each other to compare in detail, so don't know if it is feasible to modify them.
Nostalgic or Std. bag guards? The 2014 frame is same as 2009-2013. But the 2014 and newer have a very different guard mounts. The mounts will fit on a 2009. But that means $$$ to buy them. 2008 and earlier can't work. Cheapest / easiest is to find some bag guards for your year bike.
Right, don't mean to steel the tread, however, I too am looking for nostalgic saddle bag guards. My issue is that I have an '08 RKC with 2014 hard bags. I'm looking for nostalgic guards but don't know what year to get..

You'll need nostalgic hard bag guards for an '08 or older frame (90939-94A).'09-'13 guards would need mods that may be more work than worth it. The bags are fine.

After a while I remembered that the '14 bags are slightly longer than the older bags. You might want to use spacers to move the guards rearward about 1/2in.

First, you'll only want spacers if you've got '14 or newer bags on a pre '14 or older model. That's because the rear of the bags sit a little further rearward than the older bags therefore coming very close to the guards. If you position the flat two hole flange on the guard so that the mounting screw goes thru it first, you can place a small spacer between the flat flange and the fender mount to move the guards a little rearward about 3/8 to 1/2 inch. You don't need much. Once in place you can adjust the guards to be level then tighten everything up.
