I just got the 103 kit installed in my 07 FLHTC. I just got it last week and Ihave 650 miles on it. I haven't had a chance to open it up yet. I am still being easy on the bike. I am wondering if the shop gave me my own parts back. I looked at the pistons and they had a lot of buildup on them already. I would have expected 650 mile pistons to look almost new. Has anyone else looked at the pistons token out of a low mileage bike?
Do you really get enough added HP and torque from a 103 build to justify the expense?Got a quote from the dealer today of $3200 including labor. Can you really tell the differance in the seat of your pantsfrom a stock 96"? Looking for more torque to get me up the hills.
$3200 to install a bigbore kit on a 96"er? RUN away from that shop!!!!
You could do it in your garage for a good bit less than that. Perhaps something like:
Bore your jugs to 3.875" = $150
S/E flat top pistons = $110
Topend gasket set = $75
Service manual = $70
Torque wrench = $75
Piston Ring Compressor = $50
Loctite = $5
SAE Socket Set = $100
SAE Wrench Set = $100
Toolbox = $50
Oil = $40
Filter = $12
SERT = $350 or PCIII = $250
Bike Lift = $100
Shop Rags = $5
Broom = $5

1 Keg Budweiser @ $85 plus sales tax
1 Keg deposit @ $10
1 Tap deposit @ $60
1 Registration deposit @ $75
Total = $237.33 ($145 refunded when keg is returned. Actual cost is $92) (http://www.bigbluebeer.com/kegs.htm)
Acutally, the work takes only a couple hours.... it's emptying the Keg that really runs the labor tab up! So, I guess $3200 may be about right after all.
