Default Honking Brake, please HELP!

I installed an HHi 6 piston caliper and a RSD delmar 13” floating rotor and I’m getting a honking sound when I come to a complete stop at very low speed. Has anyone ever heard of an issue like this? Know anything I can do to fix it? I also have a clunking sound occasionally right when taking off from the front brake (without hold the brake at all). Should the rivets be somewhat loose or tight on the rotor? Ive had this issue since I put it on the bike and I tried tightening the rivets as they were loose, but still the same sound. My mountain bike used to make a similar sound with the rubber brakes to give you an idea of the sound. Could the pads be glazed? I’ve tried sanding the pads and chamfering the edges with no improvement. I also used scotch brite on the rotor, but still no change. I’m out of ideas...Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try coating the backs of the pads with brake grease?

Also, your rotor bolts should absolutely be tight!

Yes, when I installed the pads I coated the back with brake grease. I was referring to the rivets in the floating rotor, not the bolts that hold the rotor on, do the rivets need to be tight? Wasn’t sure if it would allow the rotor to “float” if they were too tight.

Most likely its your floating rotor.Alot of the "racing" floating rotors the rivets are lose and make noise.I believe its to compensate for the high heat environment of racing.contact the manufacturer of the rotors and see what they say, maybe they can help you out.

Yeah there’s supposed to be a slight amount of play in the rivers to allow the rotor to float for centering and to help with heat dissipation. From a quick search on the forum it seems that this also leads to a clunking sound like you’re describing; some say it goes away as the rotor heats up but returns once it’s cooled back down.

That makes sense, I sent them an email last night, we’ll see, thanks!

I see, it definitely does it more when the rotor is cool. I will loosen the rivets slightly to give it some play. Did you happen to read anything on the honking sound? Thanks for helping.

^ I’ve seen that different pad and rotor combinations can cause the squeal or loud whine due to the different compounds that companies use. Maybe try a different set of pads, you can even ask the manufacturer of the rotor what pads they recommend.

good idea, I’ll ask them. I think it would be less noisy with organic pads, these are semi-sintered I believe

yea you might want to think about this before performing this,,, loosening the rivets that hold the rotor on does not sound like a "Fix" for anything,,, other than a "fix" to need a new rotor.
