Probably 30 seconds on a warm day, 1-2 minutes on a cold day. 5-10 minutes is ridiculous. I've gone off without any warm up and my bike usually will misfire/sputter oncewhen I let off the throttle during the first mile or so. Like any engine, you obviously don't want to jump on the throttle too hard until it is up to temp.
I turn the ignition on while I'm putting on my second glove. Fire it up and go. I take it easy for about a mile down to the freeway, then it's off to the races.
alqaadir posted just enough time to get your gear on. Dealer mechanic told me same because its an air cooled engine and if you wait too long the cylinders heat way faster than the crankcase. He said to wait just long enough for the oil to circulate.
I start it, let it run for about 30 seconds and then go smoooooth and easy... The first five min or so I take it really easy and kinda "baby" it along - no stress on the motor and no load, just eeeeasy. This works well. By the time I get down to the freewayentrance it's been nearly 10 minutes of this and then I'm off and running on my wonderful one-hour therapy/commute!
Same here. 30 second warm up, baby it out of the hood, til I get to the 1st main street, which has a speed limit of 35. Takes me about 5 minutes to get to the highway, by which time everything is warmed up and ready to rumble.
Base gaskets aren't a problem anymore...but that was my procedure as wellwith my 1996 Wide Glide after a second set of base gaskets..thankfully HD came to the party even when it was out of warranty and well into the second year..still love my dealer. That was my ONLY problem with my Dyna for 10 years..sold her last summer for the 07 Ultra..
