Default Running Hot

17 APR 2018 08:58 AM
I went to go for a ride with my son, we left Home and rode up to the next town (55 KM) when I pulled up at a traffic light I noticed that the bike was abnormally hot and had no oil pressure showing on the gauge.
We pulled into the closest servo and shut her down, I checked the oil and there was none showing on the dip stick, I put in 1 liter of oil and started the bike the only oil pressure I had was when I had some revs on the engine.
I rode it back home and the oil pressure was OK while riding, but by the time I got back home The bike was again abnormally hot again and had lost all power.
I left it overnight and then restarted it, it had good oil pressure and showed no signs of getting hot – never had time to go for a road test.
Any thoughts on what may have happened?

Happens all the time... engine gets hot and oil pressure drops very low at idle. Comes back up once rpm increases. Low oil quantity is another issue... may need to check before riding for a while to see what's going on with that. Ride safe.

Agreed...a healthy Big Twin only 8 or so PSI at idle. Then it comes up to 30 to 32 more or less.

I'd ask how did this happen? After a 55 km ride it was probably not showing on the stick before the ride.

Update on the Ultra Classic,
Mechanic has diagnosed that the top end is in need of a rebuild and all is well with the crank with only .003" run out.
The following is taking place over the next few weeks and hopefully be all ready for when I get home in July, taking it out to 107 Cube, Heads CnC Ported and fully reconditioned, CP Domed pistons, Tman 590 cams, Barrels bored and ring end gap set, Cam Plate and oil pump, Lifters and adjustable push-rods, External Breather set up.
I will let you know how it turns out once completed.
Cheers

Interesting.... I'd love to know how your mechanic got to it needing a top-end rebuild, from low oil and running hot...... ?

I'm not saying it's a bad diagnosis.... just wondering how he got there. What did he find, that may him decide the entire top end needed rebuilding, because of your symptoms.....?

I'd be curious how many mile were on the motor. Your symptoms "when I pulled up at a traffic light I noticed that the bike was abnormally hot and had no oil pressure showing on the gauge. I left it overnight and then restarted it, it had good oil pressure and showed no signs of getting hot " sounds like every other Twin Cam sitting at a stop light a quart low on oil in a hot climate (Philippines in April)

Oil sitting on top of both pistons, bad score marks and low compression in rear cylinder, lifters badly worn along with worn lobes on both cams.

Ha.... well I asked!

Explains your symptoms, but I would never have guessed that much damage....

Sorry the engine broke, but you'll really enjoy those new mods, your bike should run real well...!!!
