I picked up a 2002 Electra Glide(standard). It has a screaming eagle big breather attached for the air intake. Yesterday a buddy of mine we took cleaned the carb thinking it was dirty or just all kinds of nasty inside, that wasn't the case it was clean. When we started the bike with the screaming intake off the bike waa very normal sounding. Adding the screaming eagle back to the mix, it's almost sounding like the bike is struggling to breathe. The question i have is. Adding the screaming eagle big breather does the engine need to be recalibrated/tuned for that specific intake? I'll take all the help I can get. Thanks
Usually where tuning is concerned (when changing from stock) is in the fact that you’re now putting more air in and more exhaust out (the case of doing a “stage 1”). Which SE intake do you have, care to post a pic? This info may help.
It may sound like it’s starving for air but it may just be that when you put the filter and housing on the intake, the air flow is now concentrated to a set area, enhancing the sound of the air flow so to speak. It may help to check that the air filter is being installed the correct way...I know it may sound silly but my buddy bought a used bike (‘03 Sporty) and the previous owner had the filter upside down, blocking the breather bolts. It ran weird like that lol.
Do you know if it has a tuner? Look at the plugs and check if they smell rich like excessive fuel. if you have a tuner on it, which is likely, it might be set too rich, You take off the restriction (the air cleaner) and it runs more "normal" . You might need to get another re-tune. The beauty of Auto tune like my Thundermax is you can change intakes, throttle bodies, exhaust and not have to retune

How old is the filter?
Is the filter plugged?
When is the last time the filter was cleaned/replaced?
If it was recently cleaned, is it the oil type? Was it over-oiled?
I'd check the filter before messing with the tune....

Sentence structure is a little whack on OP original post but I took it as he went to clean the filter and it was clean, that is why I went right to the tune, but hatitude has a good point, some people over oil the filter and would cause a restriction.
Nice choice on a ‘02 standard with a carb! I would first check the cleanliness of the filter. If good. ya may need to go up a couple jet sizes or raise the needle (which should have been done when the filter was installed). My guess is with the filter on you are not hearing as much intake noise and thinking there is a restriction. Contrary to popular belief, most after market air filters ( including the one you have) provide bertter airflow than nothing at all and yours flows way more air than any 88” will ever need.

I agree with Oldhippie, clean or replace the filter and adjust the carb. The '02 STD didn't come with a black motor, those tank emblems or that rear turn bar.
The early Heavy Breathers were not properly cast/vented for the carburetors. If I remember correctly it either blocked or pulled a vacuum on the carb. vent or a port. That was a long, long time ago, but we came across it early on.
