Default rocker box chatter

Looking for help. I had a friend help me install the Rockout inserts shafts in my 08 ultra and after everything is back together with all new gaskets it is making a hell of a racket coming from rocker boxes. Now to be honest he is a mechanic by trade so I am suppose to be able to trust that he put the rocker assembly back together properly. Back in 2012 we both did cam upgrades and i distinctly remember making sure that the push rods went back in correctly. However after having a conversation with him about this he isn't sure if he put push rods in correctly....with regard to color of push rods and being that I am an electrician I am not going to second guess what happened but i know that the push rods are specific to there orientation. Rocker box is real noisy almost like a knocking. If the rods are reversed can this cause this and is there any damage from this? We did not let bike run that long. Any help would be great.

One of the push rods is longer, exhaust IIRC, but would be worth double checking your year manual as well as the many YouTube videos available. If there's a chatter or knocking sound, something for sure didn't go back in right. Definitely worth the time going back in and double checking for the cost of some gaskets and labor time. HTH.

Could easily end up bending a valve, definitely don't start it until you've done the research first. Matt is right, better to be safe than fraging an engine. Cost of replacement gaskets is definitely cheap by comparison.

Did you get the rocker support plates bolted all the way down on the lower rocker boxes? Sometimes it seems like you did but when the lifters bleed down you really didn't.

Best to go back to the beginning & check your work. Here's a list of the pushrod lengths/colors...

Take your time.... the gaskets can be reused.

If everything checks out OK it's entirely possible you just didn't run the engine long enough to let the lifters pump up... sometimes it takes a few minutes.

Please let me know if I can help in any way.

Update on how everything turned out. So after doing a compression and leak down test everything is fine. We replaced the exhaust push rod and installed gaskets and re torqued everything. Bike is running great.

What happened was that when he put the push rods back in he put them in backwards. He ended up putting the exhaust push rod in the intake side and vice versa with intake push rod. So on start up it made a bunch of racket.....but all is fixed and bike is back together. I am jonesing to get in a decent ride to test out.
