A spray can of carb cleaner or brake clean with the tiny red straw stuck down in the hole and spray away. Just avoid getting either on painted or plastic surfaces.

No. They don't. Apparently you've never worked with natural gas or LP gas. It'll leak right through the threads unless some sort of sealant is used.

This is not true most of the time. Dryseal pipe thread is designed to seal all by itself, but standard run of the mill npt pipe threads are NOT self sealing, and the tape or dope fills the void and creates the seal.
