I recently picked up a low mile, one owner 2000 Electra Glide Classic.
The toe and heel shift levers were out of position for me, so I removed them to clock them different. Turns out the splines were fubar on the shaft and the shift levers.
A search here indicated this is common, with some grumbling about it, but no real solution.
For those who may not be aware, Harley has updated the shift levers. The updated version has a nut and bolt to pinch the lever to the shaft instead of the bolt threading into the opposite side of the bolt hole, which was pretty lame. The shift shaft also seems far more robust, and all is well again for me. A side benefit to this is that it is easier to find neutral now.
This happened to me as well on my 2012 Ultra. I replaced the shaft and both levers. Since then, I use a goodly amount of blue locktight on the lever bolts and haven't had a problem again. Knock on wood.
